Carbon storage and potential habitat quality across marble quarry-related land-cover transitions on Marmara Island (Türkiye)

Öz

Background and aims Marble quarrying can cause substantial land-cover transformation, particularly in spatially constrained island landscapes where extraction activities compete with natural and semi-natural areas. This study quantified the effects of quarry expansion on carbon storage and potential habitat quality on Marmara Island, Türkiye, by linking quarry development to specific land-cover transitions between 1990 and 2018. Methods Land-use/land-cover changes were analysed using CORINE data, while carbon storage and potential habitat quality were assessed using the InVEST model. Results Quarry area increased by approximately 149%, with 730.62 ha of previously non-mining land converted to mining. Shrub/semi-natural vegetation accounted for 75.27% of this expansion and forest for 18.85%. Quarry-related transitions resulted in an estimated gross carbon loss of 59,137 Mg C, of which 97.4% was associated with the conversion of forest and shrub/semi-natural land. Despite partial compensation by carbon gains from other land-cover transitions, total modelled carbon storage declined by 21,795 Mg C (1.88%). Mean potential habitat quality decreased from 0.669 to 0.614, and all cells converted to mining exhibited negative habitat-quality change. Conclusions The ecological consequences of quarry expansion depended not only on the amount of land converted but also on the land-cover type being replaced, with the largest declines in both ecosystem indicators associated with the conversion of natural and semi-natural vegetation.
