A comparative analysis of women’s identity as subjects in news bulletins in Turkey - 2001 and 2016
Öz
Television is one of the leading tools of mass media in determining and changing the attitude and behavior of the masses. When we consider the fact that the media is one of the most important ideological devices of the state, the role of television in transforming and shaping the attitudes and perceptions of masses is better understood. Of course, each message that reaches the masses through television is important and effective, but the main news bulletins in particular are one of the leading credible program types as they claim to be real. On the other hand, women are regarded by the society in relation to their role around the house, called the “private sphere”, within the deep-rooted patriarchal social structure for centuries. In the main news bulletins, this social role that is imputed to the woman is affirmed and reproduced. Positive factors are attributed to women who conform to gender roles, while women outside these formal roles are regarded as purely sexual objects. From this perspective, the aim of this study is to draw attention to the ideology and discourse of the presentation of women in the main news bulletins on television. In the study examining the main news bulletins of the Turkish television channels TRT, ATV and Show TV in 2001 and 2016, a total of 12 news bulletins were analyzed, by content analysis method in the context of the theoretical framework of the study. Thus, the study aims to find whether there has been a change in the representation of women’s identity in the main news bulletins over the past 15 years.
