A rural nationwide newspaper in Turkish press history: Ülke
Öz
The first newspaper published by the Turks in Sivas is the Sivas (1878) provincial newspaper. Vicdan and Kızılırmak newspapers, which started publishing in 1909, are extremely important in terms of locally being among the first private journalism activities in our country. The İrade-i Milliye newspaper, which was the first publication of the national struggle movement, started to be published by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1919 in Sivas. The subject of this study, the Ülke newspaper, is an extraordinary publishing activity. It is a local regional newspaper published with national identity, which is rarely encountered in our country. The newspaper, which started its publication life with the printing machines, equipment and personnel sent by the ruling power itself from Ankara during the single-party regime, published articles of remarkable intellectuals and reported national news. Ülke newspaper, which constantly communicated with and received technical support from the Ulus newspaper in Ankara in its first publication year, is a unique example that has not been studied much. The newspaper, which made twenty thousand print run especially in the first publication year, was distributed to the eastern provinces by trains. Ülke newspaper, which had been published as 4454-330 issues in three publishing periods in Sivas for four years, was analyzed by means of content analysis method. The interviews that were conducted with various names about the subject since 1998 have been classified using the interview technique, and the obtained data were compared. In the light of the information obtained after the necessary literature reviews, 376 issues of the newspaper, which had been published between November 1st, 1945 and November 21st, 1946 under the control of the single party rule in Turkey, were evaluated and interpreted from a general perspective.
