Öz

Kanadalı hekim, psikoterapist ve yazar Gabor Maté, travma–bağlanma ilişkisi temelinde modern yaşamın bireylerin psikolojik iyi oluşu üzerindeki etkilerini incelediği çalışmalarıyla hem Türkiye’de hem uluslararası alanda tanınan bir isimdir. Bu çerçevede, yazarın 2022’de Hep Kitap tarafından yayımlanan “Dağınık Zihinler” adlı eseri, onun hem mesleki deneyimini hem de nörogelişimsel temelli anlayışını bir araya getiren özgün bir çalışmadır. Kitapta Maté, dikkat eksikliği bozukluğunu (DEB) yalnızca kalıtsal bir nörolojik rahatsızlık olarak değil; erken dönem bağlanma ilişkileri, duygusal iklim ve modern toplumun hız/rekabet odaklı yapısıyla iç içe gelişen bir olgu olarak konumlandırır. DEB’e dair biyolojik açıklamaları tamamlayan; belirtileri bastırmak yerine anlamlandırmayı, davranışı cezalandırmak yerine ilişkiyi onarmayı önceleyen bir bakış açısı sunar. Bu yönüyle eser, yalnız DEB’e değil, pek çok ruhsal soruna ilişkin daha geniş bir empati paradigmasına kapı aralar. Yazar, kalıcı iyileşmenin parçalanmış ilişkiselliğin onarılmasına, yani güven, empati, duygusal aynalama ve ebeveyn-çocuk etkileşiminin niteliğinin güçlendirilmesine, dayandığını savunur. Anlatıda yazarın kişisel tanıklığının içtenliği, klinik gözlemlerin insani ve anlaşılır bir dille aktarılmasını sağlayarak metne inandırıcılık kazandırır. Kitabın özgün katkısı, DEB belirtilerini varoluşsal ve ilişkisel kopuşun dile gelişleri olarak okumaya davet eden etik-kültürel perspektifidir. Bu incelemenin amacı, Dağınık Zihinler’in yapısal örgüsünü, öne çıkan temalarını ve kavramsal yeniliklerini; güçlü yanları ve yöntembilimsel sınırlılıklarıyla birlikte değerlendirmek, böylece DEB’e ilişkin klinik ve sosyo-kültürel tartışmalara disiplinlerarası bir katkı sunmaktır.

Abstract

Canadian physician, psychotherapist, and author Gabor Maté is recognized both in Turkey and internationally for his works examining the impact of modern life on individuals’ psychological well-being through the lens of trauma and attachment. In this context, his book “Scattered Minds”, published by Hep Kitap in 2022, represents an original synthesis of his professional experience and neurodevelopmental perspective. In the book, Maté conceptualizes attention-deficit disorder (ADD) not merely as an inherited neurological condition but as a developmental phenomenon shaped by early attachment relationships, the emotional climate, and the fast-paced, competitive structure of modern society. He offers a perspective that complements biological explanations of ADD, emphasizing understanding rather than suppressing symptoms, and restoring relationships rather than punishing behavior. In this respect, the book opens a broader paradigm of empathy that extends beyond ADD to many psychological conditions. Maté argues that lasting healing depends on the restoration of fragmented relational bonds—namely the strengthening of trust, empathy, emotional mirroring, and parent–child interaction. The sincerity of the author’s personal testimony lends credibility to the narrative, as it enables his clinical observations to be conveyed in a humane and accessible manner. The book’s distinctive contribution lies in its ethical-cultural perspective, which invites readers to interpret ADD symptoms as expressions of existential and relational disconnection. The aim of this review is to evaluate the structural composition, prominent themes, and conceptual innovations of Scattered Minds together with its strengths and methodological limitations, thereby providing an interdisciplinary contribution to clinical and socio-cultural discussions on ADD.
