Evaluation of Sleep Quality and Related Factors in Patients Applied to the Occupational Diseases Clinic in a University Hospital

Öz

Aims: Sleep is one of the indispensable elements of a healthy life. Sleep is the period in which the body and brain rest, regulate memory functions and prepare for a new day. In this current research, it is aimed to assess the association between sleep quality and working conditions and individual characteristics in patients who admitted to the Occupational Diseases Polyclinic of a university hospital. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on data collected using the 11-question Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the occupational disease anamnesis form from patients who admitted to the Occupational Diseases Outpatient clinic of a university medical school hospital between November 2018 and November 2019. The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. Results: According to the PSQI scoring, only 21 (13%) of 162 participants were in the good sleep group. According to the PSQI sleep quality was observed as worse among women, those under the age of 40, those with painful complaints and those with occupational diseases (p<0.05). Although sleep quality did not differ significantly between participants working in shifts and those not working in a shift system, smoking was significantly more prevalent among shift workers. Conclusion: In order to eliminate gender-based differences in sleep quality, gender-equal policies should be adopted and implemented. The presence of pain is one of the crucial factors that impair sleep quality. In order to prevent chronic exposure to occupational risk factors in workplaces, workplace policies that implement occupational health and hygiene programs and prioritize employee health should be adopted.
