Bibliometric Analysis Of Scientific Production On Vaccine Opposition

Öz

ABSTRACT Objective Vaccination programs play an important role in controlling potential epidemics. However, the belief that vaccines do more harm than good to children's health has recently increased. Anti-vaccination movements disrupt vaccination programs. This situation has emerged as a global public health problem, as it leads to increased mortality and morbidity rates of vaccine-preventable diseases. This study aims to analyze research on vaccine opposition, identify current trends, and highlight potential areas for further study. Methods In this study, the bibliometric analysis was used to analyze scientific publications on vaccine opposition. Bibliometric data of all articles published in the Web of Science database up to 04.02.2025 were used. The analysis was carried out using the VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel programs. Results The study included 1189 articles. Publications on vaccine opposition have increased annually since 2011, reaching a peak in 2022. In addition, articles on this topic were published by 1796 institutions and 4381 authors from 98 countries. Keyword analysis showed that the most frequently used terms were related to communication, COVID-19, and vaccine opposition. Conclusion The findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic was a major factor contributing to the increase in anti-vaccination behaviors. Moreover, increased social media interaction and the rapid spread of misinformation influenced anti-vaccination behaviors, leading to a decline in vaccination rates.
