Safe Driving at Old Age

Yıl 2015, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 1, 5 - 11, 01.01.2015

Öz

Objective: The proportion of the elderly to the total population is increasing worldwide. Similarly, the number of elderly drivers is increasing. Research show that the elderly are safe drivers but have a higher risk of injury and death in case of an accident. Many elderly drivers who have difficulty driving either restrict or stop driving completely. The aim of this paper was to create a resource for physicians about safe driving at old age through a literature review of traffic safety. Method: The international literature about safe driving at old age was reviewed. No Turkish literature was encountered. Changes resulting from aging that may have negative effects on driving are discussed as a guide to medical doctors. Turkish traffic statistics regarding elderly drivers are also evaluated. Results: The number of elderly drivers is increasing. Physical problems can endanger safe driving and result in several social, economic and individual problems. In Turkey, there is no practice of driving license renewal procedure based on age and no research has been conducted on the safety of the elderly drivers from the medical point of view. Conclusion: Safe driving at old age is being discussed more with the current demographic changes. It is possible to increase safe driving through interventions and adaptive procedures. Physicians can evaluate safety issues regarding their elderly patients before they cause serious problems and thus can help prevent accidents and protect their patients
