In the first half of the nineteenth century, French and British travelers began to explore
the unfamiliar regions of the geography described as ‘Orient’. The artistic response of these
discoveries is painting, which is a combination of the observed and the fictional. Oriental paintings
are the works that come to the forefront due to its visual richness, which makes up the backdrop
and details of the described story, usually includes a lot of local colors, exotic architecture and
costume. Among the pioneering travelling artists of the period are those who travel in the different
time periods to the region including Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Morocco and Egypt, are Alexandre-
Gabriel DECAMPS, David ROBERTS, John Frederick LEWIS, Jean-Léon GEROME and William
Holman HUNT. William Holman HUNT, one of the Orientalist painters in all the literature related
to the subject, is one of the founding members of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (1848-1854), which
came together in 1848, in response to the idealist education system based on the study of the Royal
Academy’s copy of the Renaissance Period (15th-16th). The Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood operated in
the mid19th century, when the forerunner of the Industrial Revolution was experiencing major
changes and devastation in Victorian England. The group is an artistic community that is shown
as the first avant-garde movement of British painting history. William Holman HUNT, a member
of Brotherhood, while actively participating in the group, produced a number of major paintings
of literature, religion and social life. These pictures are the work that took its source from nature
and outstripped the didactic aspect of the existence of symbolic objects. Hunt’s paintings are
always pre-screened in Victorian Britain, particularly in religious images, in literature and visual

arts, to show how imperalist expansion and Orientalism are connected. In this research, after the
year of 1854, especially some of William Holman HUNT’s works, painted in Jerusalem, Egypt and
its surroundings, will be evaluated on what is the basic motivation of the painter.

bölgeye seyahat eden Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, David Roberts, John Frederick Lewis, Jean-
göstermek bakımından her zaman ön planda tutulmuştur.
