The Use Of Scrap Materials in Architecture: A Conceptual and Practical Analysis Of Junkitechture Practices

Increasing urbanization, environmental degradation, and the high carbon emissions of the construction sector have heightened the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly approaches in architecture. In this context, Junkitechture, which is based on the aesthetic, functional, and structural reuse of waste and discarded materials in architectural production, has emerged as an alternative and innovative practice. The aim of this study is to reveal the conceptual foundations and practical dimensions of Junkitechture and to provide a comprehensive evaluation in terms of its environmental contributions, formal characteristics, and production processes. As a method, document analysis, visual content review, and comparative case study were employed; four pioneering projects selected from Europe-Jellyfish Theatre (UK), Recycloop (Netherlands), Cité A Docks (France), and PH-Z2 (Ger-many)-were analyzed according to criteria such as material use, functionality, user participation, temporality, and spatial configuration. The findings indicate that the projects share common strategies, including waste-based material sourcing, low energy consumption, modular/temporary structures, collective/participatory production, and aesthetics directly linked to material–form relations. Each project embodies the principles of Junkitechture with different emphases in its own context, demonstrating that the approach is not merely a formal pursuit but a holistic architectural paradigm integrating environmental sensitivity and social interaction. In conclusion, the study positions Junkitechture as an applicable architectural strategy that aligns with the principles of the circular economy, prioritizes social participation, and promotes creative reuse practices. Although the Turkish context was not directly analyzed within the scope of this study, it is suggested as a separate field of inquiry for future research, particularly in terms of application potential and integration into policy and architectural education.
