Deconstructive Transformation Of A Functional Ceramic Form in Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing: An Experimental Study On The Teapot Form
Öz
This article examines the transformative impact of extrusion-based additive manufacturing on functional ceramic forms within a deconstructive theoretical framework. The study is grounded in the assumption that digital fabrication technologies offer a design approach capable of reconfiguring the relationship between function and form. In this context, the traditional teapot typology is selected as the object of investigation due to its established functional integrity, formal continuity, and multi-component structure. The research was conducted through a practice-based methodology. Within the scope of the study, ten experimental forms were produced using an extrusion-based ceramic 3D printer, and four examples that most clearly demonstrate the functional, structural, and formal transformations resulting from deconstructive interventions were selected for detailed analysis. The relationship between the sectional and layered logic of additive manufacturing and the deconstructive design approach was evaluated through morphological analysis, focusing on the reconfiguration of form elements and typological deviations. The findings indicate that extrusion-based additive manufacturing transforms functional ceramic form not only at the aesthetic level but also in terms of structural continuity and functional integrity. The study reveals that the layered logic of the production process directly reshapes the formal and functional organization of the ceramic object, redefining the typological boundaries between the spout, handle, and body through deconstructive interventions. In this respect, the research proposes that additive manufacturing can function as a critical tool in ceramic design and discusses the conceptual potential of digital fabrication processes in reinterpreting traditional typologies, thereby contributing to the existing literature.
