Ceramics, which have a deep-rooted history in human history, have been used in the production of many articles that meet daily needs since humanity switch to domestic life. Ceramic articles were first produced in line with the needs and then developed concerning aesthetic according to time and cultural differences. The most important of humans’ basic needs is health, and drugs used accordingly. Various materials, which of those were ceramics, were used to preserve the drugs. One of the ceramic articles produced in this process is the drug containers called 'Albarello'. Albarello is a type of ceramic jar in which dry pharmaceuticals, medicines, and oils are kept. Albarello drug containers, which were first produced in Italy in the 15th century; were made out of ceramics due to the material's durability, ease of production, and hygienic properties. The forms of Albarello are cylindrical and their surfaces are decorated with majolica known as in-glaze decoration technique. Albarello, whose form has not been changed since the beginning of its production, can be quickly diversified with its decor. While the decors of these containers differ according to the geographical region in which they were produced and the craftsman producing them, they often became an indicator of social status. Albarello is only produced as a limited-edition decorative product today. In this article, the history of the albarello, the functionality of the form, and the decor techniques that has been used will be examined. moreover, the technical and pictorial expressions of decors on the form of albarello will be explored.
