There are structures that are used in narrow areas although they are not transferred into general language. These are among the subjects of the study field of folklore nameslike proverbs, idioms and slang. The word “lying in cotton”used in Karalar Village of Yıldızeli County of Sivas is an example of slang and hidden language in terms of its nature and context. The origin of the word dates backtothe legends about the mountain in the area which is called “Tepesidelik” and about the Armenian priests who were believed to have lived in the cave on this mountain. The word “lying in cotton” can show important outcomes in terms of its relationship in folklore with its relations with myths, legends and historical events. With the presentstudy, the purpose was to show its functions by revealing the distant and close contexts of the word that was compiled from Karalar Village. The Compilation and Observation Methods were used in the study. It was observed and compiled in the product context. The observations and compilations were limited with Karalar Village, and no studies wereconducted in other settle-ments near the mountain called Tepesidelik. As a result, it was determined that the word “lying in cotton” was used for blasphemy in the field. It was concluded that the word has both slang and secret language features. It was also concluded that the word “lying in cotton” is closely related to myths, legends and historical events and that it performs functions like information and relaxation.
