Democratic Education: A Curriculum of Democratic Education

Abstract

As a management style, democracy means; “using political power based on sovereignty of public, while in terms of social life it is seen as “a philosophy of life and a life style”. In both means, democracy can be learned to individuals by democratic education. Democratic education is the educational process in which principles and laws of democracy, human rights and freedoms are transformed into clear or implicit aims in education and teaching curriculums and they are earned by the young individuals of the society practically in their learning environment. The aim of the democratic education: is to grow up citizens who have independent, critical and analytical world views and who are thoroughly aware of the principles and appliance of democracy. These qualifications only can be gained by an education which provides equal opportunities, student centered, provides sharing, solidarity and effective participation and makes it easy to learn together by meeting students’ differences. The success of educational process is based on the quality of educational program that is seen as “organized educational cases and mechanism of learning lives directed to training certain students in certain period of time”. Educational programs are dynamic structures which are composed of objectives, content, educational cases – learning lives – and assessment. While determining objectives of a democratic educational program, although it is individual centered groups and different cultures are not ignored. While constituting the content of a democratic educational program, knowledge and skills that determined objectives sign to are highlighted. It is important that these knowledge and skills are plain, simple and structure that every student can learn, provide an equilibrium between theory and application, take into consideration the social, economical, educational and vital needs and are appropriate to scientific realities. Educational cases of a democratic educational program make it easy that studying all sorts of resources by students, meeting all students concern and needs and active participation of students through every student’s understanding. Additionally it is crucial that giving an opportunity to students to express themselves and to learn democratic attitude, value and thinking styles by leaving and supporting to use and improve the methods and techniques of democratic customs. A democratic educational program should give priority to process and performance assessment methods and techniques that provide to know and assess the student effectively than classical measurement and assessment techniques
