Training School Principals in Different Countries: A New Model Proposal for The Turkish Educational System

Abstract

In this study it is purposed to introduce applications of principal training in some countries and suggest a principal training model for Turkey. In this manner, school principal training systems of The United States of America, England, France and Turkey are examined in detail. Considering principal training systems of these countries, it has been understood that it is compulsory for principals to originate from education and teaching career in the USA. In other words, The United States of America has the best model of all. In this manner, most principals in the USA have MA and PhD degrees in the field of education. While there are usually pre-service training programs in England and France, there is not pre-service training for primary school principals in France. It has been found out that each country has different in-service programs for school principals. Regarding our educational system, principalship is not considered as a professional profession and therefore, it has not been specialized to train school administrators in Turkey significantly. As a result of this study, a new pre-service and in-service principal models have been suggested in order to train principals in Turkey
