A Study on Burnout Levels of Teachers at Arts and Science Centers

Abstract

Burnout is a situation characterized with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased personal accomplishment and influences teachers and their job satisfaction at high levels. The aim of this research is to investigate the burnout level of teachers at Arts and Science Centers preferred by most of the teachers within the framework of the aforementioned factors. So, views of 19 teachers at Arts and Science Centers in Afyonkarahisar and Ankara were obtained. The data were collected through a questionnaire having open-ended questions and analyzed via ‘content analysis technique’. According to the findings of the research, three themes were detected under emotional exhaustion. They are, namely, teachers’ feelings, teachers’ moods and professional changes. Under depersonalization, three themes were recognized, namely, organizational preferences, organizational communication, and expectations from the organization. Under decreased personal accomplishment, two themes, namely, professional competence and success, and future plans were detected. It has been concluded from the findings that teachers are in a good and positive mood, communicate well and effectively at work, and they perceive themselves successful and competent. This means that teachers have lower levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and a higher level of personal accomplishment.
