An Investigation of Fifth Graders’ Functional Literacy Levels According to Certain Family Variables
Abstract
In this research, fifth graders’ functional literacy levels’ were investigated according to certain family
variables i.e., socioeconomic status, level of parental education, family type, and person in the family assisting with
homework. The sample consisted of 1265 fifth graders studying in the 2010-2011 academic year selected from
schools located in districts of different socioeconomic status in Istanbul such as Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Maltepe, Kartal.
This research had a survey design, and the data were collected through the Ecology-Based Functional Literacy Scale
and the personal information form. The scale has 32 items and three factors. Overall Cronbach alpha of the scale was
found as .868. Findings indicated that fifth graders’ fuctional literacy levels significantly differed on socioeconomic
status, level of parental education, family type, and person in the family assisting with homework (p < .01).
