The Effectiveness of In-Service Training for the Development of Reflective Thinking Skills Among Mathematics Teachers

Abstract

The middle school mathematics curriculum emphasizes thinking skills in addition to mathematical skills. One of these skills is reflective thinking. In this study, the aim was to develop, implement and evaluate an in-service training program (INSET) about reflective thinking skills. The study group was six Mathematics teachers. Mixed approach was adopted, and 20 hours of training were given. Data were collected with interviews, scales and documents which were prepared by teachers. According to results, although INSET didn’t reveal any meaningful difference quantitatively, it was determined that it contributed developing their teachers’ knowledge and ability qualitatively. Besides, it generally appeared that teachers evaluated INSET positively. It was suggested that teachers must be taken into part in INSET special to the branches and to gain thinking ability occurring useful ambience.
