Prospective Teachers’ Problem Solving Skills and Emphatic Skills

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine prospective teachers’ problem solving skills and emphatic skills according to different variables. Randomly assigned 360 students from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Turkey were taken as participants. Emphatic Inclination Scale (Dökmen, 1988) and Problem Solving Inventory (Heppner ve Peterson (1982) which was adapted to Turkish language by Sahin, Sahin and Heppner (1993) were used in data collection. Data were analyzed by t test and One Way Anova statistical methods. Results reveal that there are differences between prospective teachers’ empathic inclinations according to sex and types of course program (daytime course program or evening course program) and there is no difference between their problem solving skills according to grade level, study deparment, parents’ educational attainment. Moreover, the differences between prospective teachers’ problem solving skills according to grade level, study department, fathers’ educational attainment were found and no differences between prospective teachers’ problem solving skills according to sex, type of course program (daytime course program or evening course program) was found.
