Kuzey’in Soğuk Havasında Solan Köksüz Bir Çiçek: Anna Morgan

Öz

Bu çalışma Jean Rhys’in Karanlıkta Yolculuk (Voyage in the Dark) adlı romanını postkolonyal bağlamda ele almakta ve romanın kadın kahramanı Anna Morgan’ın Karayipler’de başlayıp İngiltere’ye uzanan karanlık yolculuğunu beyaz/siyah, deli/akıllı, kuzey/güney dikotomileri üzerinden analiz etmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı, Kreol (güneyli) bir genç kız olan Anna’nın babasının ölümünün ardından İngiliz üvey annesi Hester tarafından İngiltere’ye getirilip tek başına bırakıldıktan sonra hayatta kalmak ve aynı zamanda İngiliz toplumunda kabul görmek için harcadığı çaba ve yaptıklarına rağmen, karşılaştığı önyargıları sözü edilen karşıtlıklar bağlamında sunmaktır. Anna melez bir genç kız olarak bir ikilem yaşamaktadır: bir yandan zenci olmayı çok arzulayan Anna, diğer yandan İngiliz toplumunda kabul görmek için bir beyaz gibi davranıp giyinmesi gerektiğinin farkındadır. Ancak ne eski yaşamına dönüp bir zenci olması ne de İngiliz toplumunda bir beyaz gibi kabul görmesi mümkündür. Bu çelişkili durum Anna’nın hem fiziksel hem de psikolojik olarak hastalanmasına neden olur. Sonuç olarak, köklerinden kopmuş güneyli bir çiçek olarak Anna, zaman geçtikçe kuzeyin “soğuk” ortamında giderek daha da kötü bir sona sürüklenip en sonunda da solup gider.

A Rootless Flower Whithering in the Cold Weather of the North: Anna Morgan

Öz

This study examines Jean Rhys's novel Voyage in the Dark in a postcolonial context. It analyzes the dark journey of the novel's female protagonist, Anna Morgan, which begins in the Caribbean and extends to England, through the dichotomies of white/black, mad/sane, north/south. The aim of the study is to present the prejudices that Anna, a Creole (southern) young girl, encounters in the context of the aforementioned oppositions, despite the efforts and actions she put forth to survive and be accepted in English society after she was brought to England by her English stepmother Hester and left alone after the death of her father. Anna, a hybrid young girl, experiences a dilemma: on the one hand, she longs to be black, but on the other hand, she is aware that she must act and dress like a white person to be accepted in British society. However, it is not possible for her to return to her old life and become a black woman, nor to be accepted as a white woman in British society. This contradictory situation causes Anna to become ill both physically and psychologically. As a result, Anna, a southern flower cut off from her roots, is dragged to an increasingly worse end in the “cold” environment of the north as time passes and finally fades away.
