This article examines the vulnerabilities experienced during childhood and old age within the family context, focusing on the sociological similarities and differences between these two life stages. Historically, the family has functioned both as a protective and regulatory institution, managing individuals’ vulnerable periods across the life course. However, processes such as modernization, demographic shifts, changes in intergenerational relationships, and the transformation of caregiving responsibilities have reshaped the nature of this function. From a sociological perspective, childhood and old age have retained their significance for the family throughout history. The life course that begins with childhood within the family typically moves toward a state of completion in old age, which is often symbolically associated with wisdom. In this regard, the article is structured around four core themes: demographic change, generational dynamics, the issue of care, and the transformation of the family in the modern era. First, demographic transformations such as declining fertility rates and increased life expectancy have redefined the proportion and position of children and elderly individuals within families. Second, the evolution of intergenerational relationships has altered how childhood and old age are experienced, particularly in terms of authority, value transmission, and responsibility. Third, the article discusses how caregiving labor intersects with gender-based inequalities, highlighting the disproportionate burden borne by women. Finally, it examines how the structural and functional transformations of the family in modern societies impact the positioning and support of vulnerable individuals. This study aims to demonstrate that the family is not merely a network of biological relations, but a social institution shaped by cultural, economic, and structural determinants. It emphasizes that vulnerable life stages such as childhood and old age are directly affected by broader societal transformations. In contemporary society, childhood and old age have emerged as distinct generational categories that represent significant forms of vulnerability within the family.
