Representation of Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness in Science Fiction Cinema: A Semiotic Analysis of the Film Ex Machina
Öz
Developments in science and technology not only transform social life practices, but also make it necessary to rethink the relationships between human, machine, consciousness, and subjectivation. In particular, the increasing visibility of artificial intelligence technologies in everyday life has led to the re-discussion of qualities assumed to be specific to human intelligence and consciousness in the context of technical systems. One of the most remarkable reflections of these discussions in the cultural sphere is seen in science fiction cinema. While science fiction cinema makes representations of artificial intelligence visible through technology and future imaginaries, it also opens up for questioning such issues as posthuman existence, the body, free will, and power. The aim of this study is to examine how the image of artificial intelligence and consciousness is represented in science fiction cinema through the film Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2015). In the study, first the development of science fiction cinema is addressed, and then the forms of appearance of artificial intelligence representations in cinema are evaluated. Semiotic film analysis was adopted as the method in the study. Accordingly, the film Ex Machina was analyzed through the layers of denotation and connotation, and it was discussed how the visual and auditory signs in the film gain meaning within technological, mythical, philosophical, gender, and power-oriented codes. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the film presents artificial intelligence not only as a technical development, but also as a multilayered narrative that opens up discussion on the axes of consciousness, body, freedom, surveillance, and subjectivation. In this respect, Ex Machina can be considered as a contemporary science fiction text showing that the boundaries between human and machine are reconstructed culturally and ideologically.
