From Classical Cosmology To Modern Cosmology The Transformation of the Concept of Heaven

Öz

This study examines the change in the meaning of the concept of heaven in traditional societies and belief systems in the modern era. Instead of a cosmological understanding rooted in the sanctity of heaven in ancient beliefs, mythologies, and later revealed religions, a cosmology shaped by reason and science has become dominant in modernity. Thus, the traditional understanding of heaven has undergone a significant transformation, even a rupture In traditional cosmology, the concept of heaven, sacred as the means of the sacred's penetration, is a symbol with depth and multiple levels in the metaphysical sense. With this symbolic quality, heaven possesses a sublimity that conveys the sign and knowledge of higher truths and establishes humanity's interaction with the creator through it. Beginning with Aristotle, the concept gradually severed its ties with the sacred, heaven completely lost its symbolic meaning in the process that continued with Galileo. Abstracted from its metaphysical truth by modern cosmology and transformed into the domain of science, reduced to physical reality, this truth lost its divinity and severed its ties with the infinite. As a matter of fact, heaven is no longer a signifier of divine truth and a means of communication with the creator. As a result, heaven and its layers, which elevated man to a position greater than space, condemned him to the dungeon of this incomplete and still in need of completion realm with modernism. The study theoretically discusses and evaluates how the heaven has evolved from its mythological and philosophical meanings and belief systems to its meaning in modern science and cosmology, under the subheadings "mythological heaven" and "scientific sky". The study analyzes the problems and changes that emerged with the loss of heaven as a symbol.
