Philosophy at the Edge of Life: Socrates as a Philosopher-Soldier

Öz

War has invariably occupied a central position in the domain of philosophy, a consequence of its profoundly destructive and transformative impact on human life and history. Despite the fact that the history of philosophy has witnessed numerous analyses of war, the relationship between philosophers and war has, in general, been a neglected area. However, the battlefield, as a space of holistic transformation, exerts a permanent and lasting influence on the individual throughout his life. Consequently, it is imperative to acknowledge the imprints of war on the theories and character development of the philosophers under scrutiny, particularly when the philosophical systems of combatants are the focal point of inquiry. In our study, the effect of war on the philosophies and character transformations of warrior philosophers is analyzed through the case of Socrates, who, as far as is known, spent ten years of his life in active military service, albeit intermittently. In this context, the accounts of the philosopher's successes, manners, attitudes and behaviors during the wars were evaluated. Considering the war conditions of the period and the relations between Socrates and the warrior elites of Ancient Athens, the place of military service in Socrates' life and its effects on his character have been scrutinized.

Yaşamın Sınırında Felsefe: Filozof-Asker Olarak Sokrates

Öz

Savaş, insan yaşamı ve tarihi üzerindeki yıkıcı ve dönüştürücü etkisi nedeniyle her zaman için felsefenin odağında olmuştur. Felsefe tarihi savaşa ilişkin çok sayıda çözümlemeye sahne olmuş olsa da filozofların savaşla olan ilişkileri genellikle göz ardı edilmiştir. Oysa bütünlüklü bir dönüşüm mekânı olan savaş meydanı, bireyin üzerinde yaşamı boyu kalıcı, süreğen etkiler bırakmaktadır. Bu nedenle özellikle savaş meydanında yer almış muharip filozofların düşünce dizgeleri soruşturmalara konu edilirken söz konusu filozofların kuramlarında ve karakter gelişimlerinde savaşın izlerini göz ardı etmemek gerekir. Çalışmamızda savaşın muharip filozofların felsefeleri ve karakter dönüşümleri üzerindeki etkisi; bilindiği kadarıyla, aralıklarla da olsa, yaşamının on yıllık bölümünü etkin askerlik göreviyle geçiren Sokrates örneği üzerinden incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda filozofun savaşlardaki başarılarına, tavır, tutum ve davranışlarına ilişkin aktarımlar değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Dönemin savaş koşulları ve Antikçağ Atina’sının savaşçı elitleri ile Sokrates’in ilişkileri göz önünde tutularak askerlik görevinin Sokrates’in yaşamındaki yeri ve karakteri üzerindeki etkileri irdelenmiştir.
