Investigation of the Relationship Between Academic Self-Efficacy and Professional Anxiety of Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge Course Teacher Candidates
Abstract
In this study, the relationship between academic self-efficacy levels and professional anxiety among prospective Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge (RCMK) teachers was examined. Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in their ability to successfully perform a specific task, and it also encompasses one's evaluation of their capability to cope with challenges using their own competencies. This concept holds importance across various fields, including education, where academic self-efficacy is defined as the belief in one’s ability to carry out an academic task at a certain level of proficiency. On the other hand, professional anxiety represents the negative emotions that individuals experience regarding the uncertainties and difficulties they may encounter in their current or future professional lives. This type of anxiety originates from factors such as workload, performance expectations, job insecurity, and career development, and can adversely affect job performance. Excessive workload can hinder the timely and effective completion of tasks, potentially leading to psychological problems that threaten mental health. Therefore, the study focused on examining the relationship between academic self-efficacy and professional anxiety. The research was designed and conducted using a quantitative approach, specifically employing the causal-comparative method among quantitative research designs. The relationships between academic self-efficacy and professional anxiety were analyzed in relation to variables such as gender, voluntary enrollment in the department, and academic year. The data collection tools used in the study were the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale and the Professional Anxiety Scale for Preservice Teachers. The population of the study consisted of theology faculty students across Turkey. The sample was drawn from this population using the simple random sampling method, which is a commonly used technique in scientific research that allows all individuals in the population an equal chance of selection. The Faculty of Theology at Fırat University was chosen as the study site, and an appropriate statistical formula was applied to calculate the sample size. Based on the defined population size and the accepted margin of error, the sample size was calculated, and the number of selected participants was deemed sufficient. The study involved 400 preservice teachers enrolled at Fırat University Faculty of Theology, including 120 male and 280 female students. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS-22 software. Mean total scores of the teacher candidates regarding their academic self-efficacy and professional anxiety were calculated. The data were tested using t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and simple linear regression analysis. According to the results, RCMK preservice teachers exhibited a moderate level of academic self-efficacy. Among the sub-dimensions, female participants scored higher than males in the Social Status dimension. It was found that the participants had high levels of professional anxiety, with the "Appointment-Oriented Anxiety" sub-dimension showing the highest mean score. Female participants had higher average academic self-efficacy scores than their male counterparts, whereas male participants reported higher levels of professional anxiety than females. It was also determined that those who had voluntarily chosen the department exhibited higher academic self-efficacy. Furthermore, fourth-year students had higher levels of academic self-efficacy compared to preparatory class students. It was found that the professional anxiety levels of RCMK preservice teachers significantly predicted their academic self-efficacy levels. Additionally, a statistically significant but weak correlation was observed between the participants’ professional anxiety scores and their academic self-efficacy scores. The study revealed that the professional anxiety experienced by RCMK preservice teachers significantly affected their academic self-efficacy levels, indicating a statistically significant yet low-level relationship between the two variables.
