Hanbalism and Hanbalities in the Viewpoint of Asharite Scholars (Disagreements and Accusations)
Abstract
Relations between sects are built on discourses first. Nicknames and negative qualifications often lead to negative associations. When viewed from this angle the bad accusations that the Ash'arite scholars use about the Hanbalities are really striking. So, both are included in the Ahl al-Sunnah. In terms of Ash'arî scholars, Hanbalism is a branch within the Ahl al-Sunnah and represents a true understanding of religion. However, the Hanbalites were subjected to very serious criticisms about the comment of Allah’s qualities, nature of the Holy Qur'an’s letters. Beside of this, they were accused of some extreme accusations such as Hashviyya, Mucessima, Mushabbiha, idler and ignorant. These negative qualifications concern with ensuring the legitimacy of the religious thought they represent, as well as religious sensitivities. On the other side, being supported politically after Nizam al-Mulk became vizier, to gain an advantageous position to spread their ideas and to get all the necessary opportunities for it influenced their language. Finally, the reaction of the Hanbalities to the rise of the Asharism, this reaction sometimes caused social violence, is reflected in their wordings too.
