The Evaluation of the Relationship Between the Use of Radiation Producing Devices and Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationsip between the usage of radiation producing devices and thyroid cancer.

Methods: In our study, we formed a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions to apply to 100 participants admitting the General Surgery Clinics of Ankara Training and Research Hospital. Participants were included to study as; the thyroid cancer group with 58 patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had thyroidectomy and the control group with 42 participants with no cancer history. We investigated factors like usage of mobile phones, computers, hair dryer, shaver and history of plain films of head and neck with the questionnaire.

Results: Study consisted of 66 female and 34 male, totally 100 participants. Mean age of participants was 47.45 (±12.90) years in the thyroid cancer group and 38.02 (±11.30) years in the control group. Previous history of plain film of head and neck region (teeth, head, and neck X-ray graphy) was higher in the study group (%55) than control group (%11) (p<0.001). Although statistically unsignificant, shaver and hair dryer usage rate was higher in the control group compared with the study group.

Conclusion: With the results of the investigation for thyroid risk factors, we concluded that the history of head and neck graphy increases the incidence of thyroid cancer. We suggest avoidance from teeth, head and neck X-ray graphies in unnecessary situations.

Radyasyon Üreten Cihazların Kullanımı ile Tiroid Kanseri Arası İlişkinin Değerlendirilmesi

Özet

Amaç: Radyasyon üreten cihazların kullanımı ile tiroid kanseri arası ilişkinin sorgulanması amaçlanmıştır.

Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmamızda Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Genel Cerrahi Klinigine başvuran 100 kişiye uygulanmak üzere 10 adet sorudan oluşan anket oluşturuldu. Vakaların 58 tanesi tiroid kanser tanılı ve tiroidektomi operasyonu geçirmiş hastalardan oluşurken, 42 tanesi herhangi bir kanser öyküsü olamayan kontrol grubu olarak çalışmaya dahil edildi. Anket soruları arasında cep telefonu, saç kurutma makinesi, tıraş makinesi, bilgisayar kullanım durumu, baş boyun direkt grafı çekim öyküsü gibi etmenler sorgulandı.

Bulgular: Çalışmamıza, 66 kadın ve 34 erkek olmak üzere toplam 100 vaka dahil edildi. Hastaların ortalama yaşı tiroid kanseri grubunda 47.45 (±l2.90 yaş), kontrol grubunda 38.02 (±ll.30 yaş) olarak bulundu. Daha önce baş boyun bölgesine grafı çekilme (diş, baş, boyun x-ray grafı) durumu tiroid kanseri grubunda (%55), kontrol grubuna göre (%1 l) daha yüksek bulundu(p<0.00l). Tıraş makinesi ve saç kurutma makinesi kullanımı oranı kontrol grubunda, tiroid kanser grubunda göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmamakla birlikte daha fazla bulundu. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda uyguladıgımız anket sonucunda sorguladıgımız tiroid kanseri risk faktörlerinden baş boyun bölgesine grafı çekilme öyküsü olanlarda tiroid kanser görülme sıklıgının arttıgı saptandı. Grafı çekilmenin gerekli olmadıgı durumlarda diş, baş ve boyun bölgesine x-ray grafıden kaçınılması gerektigini düşünmekteyiz.
