Evaluation of Intuitive Eating, Mindful Eating and Self-Compassion Status in University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate intuitive eating, mindful eating, and self-compassion levels among 300 university students aged 18-35. Method: A questionnaire was used to assess students’ demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and levels of intuitive eating, mindful eating, and self-compassion. Body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumferences, and waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios were calculated. Results: The mean scores were 3.4 ± 0.6 for intuitive eating, 3.4 ± 0.5 for mindful eating, and 2.9 ± 0.4 for self-compassion. Male students had significantly higher scores for intuitive eating and self-compassion than female students (p<0.05). Intuitive eating was positively correlated with mindful eating and negatively correlated with BMI (p<0.05). Among females, those with a waist circumference <88 cm had higher intuitive eating and mindful eating scores, while those with ≥ 88 cm had higher self-compassion scores (p<0.05). Mindful eating was higher in women with a waist-to-hip ratio <0.85 and intuitive eating was higher in those with a waist-to-height ratio <0.5 (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that levels of mindful eating influence both intuitive eating and self-compassion. Promoting awareness and behavioral change interventions may support the development of healthier eating behaviors in university students.
