Evaluating the Quality and Reliability of YouTube Videos on Physical Activity for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Öz

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos focused on physical activity for children with autism spectrum disorder. Method: Two independent raters assessed a total of 95 YouTube videos retrieved using the keywords 'physical activity for autism' using the Modified DISCERN tool and the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Inter-rater agreement was evaluated using the Kappa statistic, and the distribution of the data was examined using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test and other appropriate non-parametric analyses. Results: Substantial inter-rater agreement was observed (κDISCERN = 0.814; κGQS = 0.808). The mean GQS and Modified DISCERN scores were 2.43 ± 1.13 and 1.46 ± 1.26, respectively. Videos created by healthcare professionals and autism-specific organisations had significantly higher quality scores (p <0.001 and p <0.01, respectively). A strong positive correlation was found between GQS and DISCERN scores (r = 0.797, p <0.001), while a negative correlation was observed between DISCERN scores and the video-like ratio (r = −0.281, p = 0.008). Conclusion: Most YouTube videos addressing physical activity for children with autism spectrum disorder are of suboptimal quality. Content produced by healthcare professionals and autism-specific organisations tends to be more reliable and informative.
