The Experiences and Perceptions of Surgical Nurses in Providing Care to Patients Who Do Not Speak the Dominant Language: A Qualitative Study

Öz

Objective: It is known that patients with impaired understanding and speech of the dominant language may experience more negative experiences during the perioperative process. This study aimed to investigate the experiences and perceptions of surgical nurses regarding providing perioperative care to patients who do not speak the dominant language.

Method: This study is qualitative research conducted with the participation of 13 surgical nurses. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured form. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The current study also employed Lincoln and Guba criteria to increase the data trustworthiness and rigor.

Results: The data of study revealed three main themes: (1) alternative methods for determining care needs, (2) strategies used to facilitate communication, and (3) perception of occupational self-inadequacy.

Conclusion: This study can guide nurses, health administrators, and policymakers in improving the quality of care, increasing patient safety, and developing innovative solutions for these patients.
