Objective: The study aimed to evaluate psychological resilience, coping styles, and mental health status of nurses working in the regional mental health and illnesses hospital.
Methods: It was a descriptive study. The population of the study consisted of 130 nurses working in a regional mental health and diseases hospital. The study was completed with 97 nurses. Data were collected with the introductory information form, the Resilience Scale for Adults, the Coping Style Scale, and the Brief Symptom Inventory between April 2nd - 2016 and August 15th, 2016. Ethics committee permission was obtained. In the statistical analysis Student t-test, Mann Whitney U test, one way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, Pearson Correlation, and Multiple Regression analysis were used.
Results: 76.3% of the nurses participating in the study were women and the average age was 39.26±7.63. Coping Style Scale self-confident approach sub-dimension mean score was 2.30 ± 0.45. It was found out that the Resilience Scale for Adults' social resources sub-dimension mean score was 28.55±4.94. Brief Symptom Inventory Global Severity Index score was 0.10±0.10 (median=0.07). When the effects of the Psychological Resilience Scale sub-dimension scores for adults on the Coping Style Scale self-confident approach sub-dimension score were evaluated by regression analysis; the model was found to be highly significant (p: 0.007; p <0.01) and the R square value was 0.419.
Conclusion: The nurses mostly use a self-confident and optimistic approach among their coping styles. They have moderate psychological resilience. The mental symptoms they show are not at the illness level.
