Yield Potential of some Candidate Confectionary Sunflower Cultivars in Menemen, Izmir Ecological Conditions

Öz

ABSTRACT: The main objective of the study was to determine suitable confectionary sunflower cultivars. The experiments were conducted in 2015 and 2016 growing seasons, in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications, on the experiment field of Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) in Menemen conditions. Research materials were the candidate oilseed hybrid sunflower varieties which were developed by sunflower breeding program of AARI and oilseed hybrid sunflower varieties. Observations were made on seed yield (kg/da), 1000 seed weight, hectoliter weight (g/l), seed oil content, plant height (cm), head diameter (cm), husk percentage (%), days to flowering date (days) and days to physiological maturity (days), seed width (mm) and seed length (mm). According to two year results of this study statistically significant differences were found in all traits among the varieties in Menemen - Izmir (Turkey) conditions. The highest yield obtained from Cigdem, ETAE-NGL, Ege Günesi as 637, 629 ve 620 kg/da respectively in 2015. Whereas, the highest yield obtained from Cigdem and Ege Günesi with 592 kg/da and 586 kg/da respectively in 2016. According to the results of combined mean yield for two years (2015 and 2016) the highest yield obtained from Cigdem and Ege Günesi as 614 and 603 kg/da respectively. Increase in sunflower production could be possible by the expansion of acreage, giving importance to the second crop agriculture, and beside those the high-yielding varieties need to be planted. Research results indicated that in terms of the yield and some quality characteristics of Ege Günesi is a promising candidate variety for confectionary sunflower production in Turkey.
