The effect of self-esteem on self-care agency of patients on hemodialysis

Öz

Aim: This descriptive cross-sectional study was planned and conducted to evaluate the effect of self-esteem on self-care agency in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: The study included 116 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Data were collected using the Patient Information Form, the Self-Esteem Scale (CSS), and the Self-Care Agency Scale. The data were obtained from patients treated in the dialysis units of a private hospital between October 2022 and October 2023. Results: The mean score of the Self-Esteem Scale was 77.61±14.45, and the mean score of the Self-Care Agency Scale was 97.80±18.89. A high-level positive correlation was found between self-care agency and self-esteem (r=0.75, p<0.05). The regression analysis conducted to determine the cause–and–effect relationship between self-esteem and self-care agency was statistically significant (F=153.54; p=0.001<0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicate a strong relationship between self-esteem and self-care agency, suggesting that individuals’ self-care abilities are closely associated with their perceptions of self-worth. To enhance self-esteem and self-care agency in patients undergoing hemodialysis, healthcare professionals should provide more education and support, and patients’ relatives should also be included in these educational programs.
