Examination of hypertension patients’ knowledge levels and self-efficacy regarding their disease

Öz

Aim: The present study was conducted with the objective of examining the level of knowledge and self- efficacy of patients with hypertension regarding their disease. Methods: This descriptive study was carried out with 400 patients diagnosed with hypertension who attended the cardiology outpatient clinic at a university hospital in Ankara between January and July 2025. Results: The mean total score on the Hypertension Knowledge- Level Scale for patients participating in this study was 11.39±1.60, while the mean total score on the Hypertension Self-Efficacy Scale was 58.21±6.52. The findings revealed a positive and significant correlation between the total knowledge score and the total self-efficacy score (r=0.239; p<0.01). The regression analysis conducted to determine the effect of hypertension knowledge level on hypertension self-efficacy revealed that the model was significant (F=24.015; p<0.001). The total hypertension knowledge- level score demonstrated a significant correlation with hypertension self-efficacy scores and exhibited a positive influence on self-efficacy (B=0.972; SE=0.198; β=0.239; t=4.900; p<0.001). Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that an increase in disease-specific knowledge levels in patients is associated with an increase in their self-efficacy regarding the disease. Individuals with sufficient knowledge about the definition, symptoms, and complications of hypertension have higher levels of self-efficacy, emphasizing the importance of the educational and counseling roles provided to patients. Furthermore, motivational, supportive, and empowering approaches should be adopted to strengthen patients’ perceptions of self-efficacy.
