A Comparison of Physical Parameters, Functional Performance, and Life Quality in Home-residing and Nursing Home-residing Older Adults with No History of Falls

Öz

Aim: This study compared the physical parameters, functional performance and quality of life scores in older adults without history of falls living in nursing homes and at home and evaluated correlations among these factors.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed older adults living in nursing homes (n = 59) and at home (n = 44) using the Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Mini Mental State Examination, 30-Second Chair Stand Test, and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP).

Results: No significant differences between nursing home and home living were found for lower extremity muscle strength, balance, quality of life, functional performance, and mental status (p> 0.05). Correlation analysis of the data from the older adults living in nursing homes as different result from living at home showed a significant negative relationship between functional performance with lower extremity muscle strength (r= -0.401, p= 0.003) and balance (r=-0.519, p=0.0001).

Conclusion: Studies should evaluate the fall risk based on balance, lower extremity muscle strength, functional performance, mental status, and quality of life in either the older adults living nursing home or living at home. This study provides information for clinicians and researchers in future studies because it includes functional performance and quality of life as well as physical parameters
