An Overview of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Practice in COVID-19 Pandemic

Öz

In December 2019, unknown cause of pneumonia occurred in Wuhan, China. It was defined that the pneumonia agent in these patients was a novel strain of human coronaviruses, 'severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2' (SARS-CoV-2; first named nCoV-2019). In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) for the disease caused by this virus; named coronavirus disease-2019 (COrona VIrus Disase 2019; COVID-19). Evidence from China, Italy and Iran shows that otolaryngololgy specialists have a very high risk of transmission of COVID-19. These risks arises due to contact of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and exposure to patient secretions. In this article, we tried to present the risks faced by otolaryngology physicians, their common problems and solutions with the current literature for the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Pandemisinde Kulak Burun Boğaz ve Baş Boyun Cerrahisi Pratiğine Genel Bakış

Öz

Çin’in Wuhan kentinde Aralık 2019’da sebebi bilinmeyen pnömoni vakaları ortaya çıktı. Bu hastalardaki pnömoni etkeninin insan koronavirüslerinin yeni bir türü ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus- 2’ (SARS-CoV-2; önce nCoV- 2019 olarak isimlendirildi) olduğu tanımlandı. Şubat 2020’de Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) bu virüsün neden olduğu hastalığın adına; koronavirüs hastalığı-2019 (COrona VIrus Disase 2019; COVID-19) adlandırmasını yapmıştır. Çin, İtalya ve İran’dan elde edilen kanıtlar Kulak Burun Boğaz (KBB) uzmanlarının çeşitli açılardan COVİD- 19 bulaşma riskinin çok yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Üst solunum yollarının mukozaları teması ve hasta sekresyonlarına maruziyet nedeniyle bu risk oluşmaktadır. Bu makalede, COVİD-19 salgını için Kulak Burun Boğaz pratiğinde hekimlerin karşı karşıya kaldıkları riskler, sık karşılaşılan problemler ve onlara güncel literatür eşliğinde çözüm yolu sunulmaya çalışmıştır.
