OTTOMAN PERIOD FOUNTAINS IN NEVSEHIR

Abstract

Nevşehir where has been a settlement since prehistoric times, is quite striking in terms of the civilizations that lived in this region and the works that they left behind. Historical monuments of different religious and ethnic cultures built in Nevşehir and its surrounding area give an idea to the researchers about the historical texture of the province. Especially, Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha after becoming the Grand Vizier renovated Nevşehir Province with important structures. Most of these structures have been studied by contemporary researchers, but there is no detailed study about the fountains that seem to disappear when compared to other structures. The fountains, which are the most artistic constructions of Turkish-Islamic water architecture reflect the features of the era when they were built with plan-architectural arrangements and decorative features. Fountains show how the Turkish culture gives importance to the hygiene and the generosity. This article aims to reveal thirteen Ottoman era fountain examples which were built in XVIII. and XIX. centuries. The fountains which are examined have largely lost their originality and have not reached the present day as a whole. Fountains, water, collected from a reservoir or pipes bringing tress or tap, marble, stone or similar materials, made public off the water intake sites. Moreover, they are relativly small arthistic structures which reflect aesthetic quality of the era, bring movement to squares, complete aesthetically other architectures, and supply water requirements of citizens. In these purposes, 17 fountains constructed in Nevşehir. Fountains, that place in the Nevşehir district, do not have intense embellishment. In almost all of them, pointed or round arches had been used. In Nevşehir fountains, cut stone structures are intensively used, while marble is relativly less used.
