The First discovery of completc lonian bronzc belts was madc in the summer of 1955, in the British School at Athcns’ excavations ol' the Harbour Sanctuar}^ at Emporio in South Chios The full publi- cation of the finds must await that of the rest of the excavation, but since this discovery has led to the recognition of parts of similar ob- jects on other lonian sites, and has also raiscd important cıuestions of the relationship bctıvecn lonian and Phrygian metahvork, it has scemcd desirable to publish this preliminary account and classifica- tion.
