Aim
The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons for transfer requests of nurses.
Material and Methods
This is a descriptive and retrospective study. Our study includes all the nurses who worked at an inward patient facility of theMinistry of Health of Turkey and wished to be transferred to a new deparment between the years of 2011 and 2014.
Results
Amongst the participants; 89% were women with the mean age of 30.75±6.412, 44.7% have a college degree and 69.4% have been working at the departments with higher risks of occupational injury and work accidents. The reasons for transfer requests were health issues, wishing to major, mobbing, long working hours, irregular shifts and work schedules. The main reason for transfer requests was health issues (30.6%). Most of the participants were found to be working at the Emergency Department (37.3%) and the Intensive Care Unit (25.4%). Statistically significant difference was found between two groups of nurses; nurses with a college or a PhD degree were more likely to request a transfer in order to major in.
Conclusion
The main reason for requesting a transfer was health-related issues. In addition to this, having a higher academic degree leads the nurses to be more willing to transfer. We suggest that nurses’ requests and competences should be taken into consideration anda detailed review of the reasons of transferring should be made.
