The Relationship Between Structural Characteristics of the Business and Disruptive Innovation: A Field Research
Abstract
In dynamic environmental conditions, businesses carry out innovation activities as creative innovations in order to sustain their existence and rivalry with their rivals. Today, it is seen that competitors are eliminated with the innovations made, in other words, the disruptive effect of innovations emerges. While businesses carry out disruptive innovation activities, they may face factors that may affect them in this process. These factors are included in the literature as individual and organizational. The approach to disruptive innovation activities may differ from the structural characteristics of businesses and the perspectives of managers. Based on this idea, this study was conducted in order to determine the relationship between the structural characteristics of the business and disruptive innovation. The research population consists of medium-sized businesses producing construction and construction machinery in Ankara, and the sample group consists of managers working in these businesses. The research data were collected from managers working in the lower, middle and upper management staff of 141 businesses with simple random sampling and survey method. The hypotheses established in the research were tested with SPSS 21.0 statistical program. In the light of the findings obtained from the analyzes, it was determined that there are significant differences between the establishment year of the business, legal structure, type of production, the unit or person directing the innovation and the working period in the business and disruptive innovation. On the other hand, the analysis findings revealed that there is no significant difference between the market type of the business, its rivalry situation, its position in the business and its total working period and disruptive innovation.
