Diyar-ı Gurbette Talebe Olmak: Tanzimat’tan II. Meşrutiyet’e İstanbul’da Taşralı Medrese Talebelerinin Yaşadığı Zorluklar ve Aile Bağları

Öz

19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısı ve 20. yüzyılın başlarında İstanbul’da eğitim alan taşralı medrese talebelerinin yaşamış olduğu sorunları aile ilişkileri bağlamında inceleyen bu makale, medrese talebelerinin hayatlarının bu dönemini aydınlatma ve daha belirgin hale getirme amacındadır. Ailelerin medrese talebelerinin medrese eğitimini tercih etme aşamasından, eğitim amacıyla İstanbul’a gitme süreci ve buradaki sorunlarla başa çıkma aşamalarına kadar birçok açıdan çocuklarına destek olmaya çalıştıkları anlaşılmaktadır. Bu destek olma durumu kimi zaman çocuklarını İstanbul’daki hemşeri bağlantılarına yönlendirme, kimi zaman da doğrudan fiili olarak aile bireylerinin eğitim sürecinin bir parçası olması şeklinde gerçekleşmiştir. Bunun yanında medrese talebelerinin İstanbul’a geldikleri ilk anlardan itibaren, yaşadıkları kimi sorunların da etkisiyle aile ve memleketlerine yönelik derin bir özlem duydukları gözlemlenmektedir. Bu durumla başa çıkma uğraşında olan medrese talebelerinin bazı çözüm yolları ürettikleri söylenebilir. Bu çözüm yöntemlerinden ilki ailelerini İstanbul’a getirmeye çalışmaktır. İkincisi ise maddi olarak fırsat buldukları her dönemde sıla-i rahim yapmaktır. Fakat bu iki çözüm yöntemi de kimi zaman oldukça zor bir sürece tekabül etmektedir.

Being a Student in a Diyar-ı Gurbet (Foreign Land): The Challenges Faced by Provincial Madrasa Students in Istanbul and Their Family Ties from the Tanzimat to the Second Constitutional Era

Öz

This article examines the challenges experienced by provincial madrasa (Islamic religious school) students who studied in Istanbul during the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, focusing specifically on the context of family relations. It tries to illuminate and put into closer relief this particular characteristic of the students' lives. The evidence reveals that families endeavored to help their children in multiple ways: from the early step of choosing a madrasa education, through the process of relocating to Istanbul for their studies, to coping with the various problems they encountered there. This assistance presented itself variously—sometimes as guidance toward fellow townsmen networks in Istanbul, and at other times as the actual, physical involvement of family members in the educational process itself. Furthermore, it is observed that from their early moments in Istanbul, the madrasa students—also impacted by various material and social hardships they faced—harbored a great sense of longing for their family and hometown. It might be argued that these kids evolved several techniques to cope with this predicament. The first of these was seeking to bring their family to Istanbul. The second was fulfill sıla-i rahim (upholding family bonds) to visit their relatives and homeland whenever financial resources permitted. However, both options often linked to a relatively complex process.
