Following
the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, with the realization of the
social, cultural, economic, political reform movements, it was aimed to create
a modern country. The founding and leading cadre desired to involve the public
particularly in the modernization of the country. However, it is difficult to state that the
folk were conscious enough of internalising the modernization efforts in
general, though there were regional differences. The regional differences could
be attributed to the ethnicity to a considerable extent. That is to say,
although the official language of the state was Turkish, in some of the eastern
provinces including Hakkâri, which establishes the framework of this study,
Kurdish was the mostly spoken language and the number of those who could speak
Turkish was low. Therefore, a way was sought to solve the problems arising from
cultural separation, which is a natural result of ethnic identities of the
period. The activities of people’s house, people’s rooms formed in a remote
corner of the country, in Hakkâri, which lacks all kinds of development
opportunities, are important in this respect.
