Chronogrammatic Poems Written For The Conquest Of Belgrade
Öz
The practice of chronogramming, which involves using the numerical values of Arabic-derived letters to indicate the year of a significant event in a sentence, verse, or couplet, is called chronogramming. In classical Turkish literature, chronogramming began to develop from the 14th century onwards and reached its most fruitful period in the 18th century. Belgrade, first conquered in 1521 during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566), was lost during the Second Siege of Vienna (1688), known as the Vienna Disaster of 1683, and recaptured by the Ottomans in 1690. Left to the Austrians by the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718, Belgrade was returned to the Ottomans by the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739. Belgrade was also taken from Serbian rebels in 1813. In classical Turkish literature, the first conquest in 1521 during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent is commemorated with the conquest of Belgrade by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Numerous historical poems were written for the second conquest during the reign of Ahmed (1691-1695), the third conquest in 1739 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I (1730-1754), and the fourth conquest during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839). According to our findings, 3 historical poems were written for the 1521 conquest, 3 for the 1690 conquest, 15 for the 1739 conquest, and 3 for the 1813 conquest. Numerically, the 1739 conquest received a higher number of historical poems. This higher number of poems for the 1739 conquest is related to the development of historical record-keeping. Various methods of historical record-keeping were used in the 24 historical poems we identified. These texts, written in different poetic forms ranging from single-verse poems to poems of up to 44 verses, shed light on history. This study examines the poems written in classical Turkish literature about the conquest of Belgrade in terms of form and content, provides evaluations of these poems, and reveals the importance of Belgrade in Ottoman history through these poems.
