The chondrogenic potential of intraarticular free periosteal allografts ın guinea pigs
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the chondrogenic potential of free intraarticular allografts of periosteum. 15 albino and 5 colouredguinea pigs selected from two different closed colonies were used in this study. Two grouphs consisting of 5 paris in each were formed. Group 1 was composed solely of albinos, group 2 was composed of mixed pairs of albino and coloured guinea pigs.
A graft of periosteum was taken from the tibia and folded back on itself so that the cambium layer faced outward on interval of 6 weeks there were no histological findings pertaining to graft rejection.
The percentage of neochondrogenesis varied between 100% and 25%in groups 1 and 2 respectively. Primitive mesenchumal tissue was the predominant tissue in both groups histologically. It is concluded that free periosteal allografts are not rejected, have chondrogenic potential and histocompatibility seems to be an important factor in the chondrogenic potential of periosteum.
