An Analysis of the Social Media Designs of The New York Times, Daily Sabah and Sabah Newspapers in terms of Visual Communication Design: The Example of Instagram

In today’s world, where digital journalism is rapidly evolving, the visual language used by news organizations on social media platforms has gone beyond aesthetic preferences to become a fundamental element of corporate identity, ideological representation, and communication with the target audience. News content shared on visual-focused platforms such as Instagram are not merely tools for conveying information, but also stand out as a form of communication that reflects the values and cultural identities of institutions. The visual communication strategies used in the Instagram posts of The New York Times, Daily Sabah, and Sabah newspapers were evaluated in terms of design principles. In the study conducted using qualitative content analysis, a total of 12 visuals were analyzed, two from each newspaper being “the most engaging” and two being “representative of the institution.” The analyses were conducted in line with Gestalt theory. The findings show that newspapers adopt different visual narrative forms depending on their ideological orientation, corporate identity, and target audience. The New York Times creates an analytical, balanced, and information-focused design language; Daily Sabah emphasizes diplomacy and international representation; and Sabah newspaper prefers a narrative language centered on national unity, leadership, and emotional intensity. It is observed that aesthetic perfection alone does not determine audience engagement in social media environments; emotional intensity, cultural context, and representational power are more decisive factors in engagement. These findings reveal that visual communication design in digital journalism plays an active role not only in form but also in the production of meaning, identity, and ideology. Overall, this study demonstrates that visual communication design in digital journalism is not merely a formal element, but plays a decisive role in the production of meaning, identity, and ideology.
