Monitoring the Effects of Behavioral Disorders on the Human Brain: A Data Visualization Animation Application Developed within the Scope of the TÜBİTAK 2209-A Undergraduate Research Project

This study presents a medical animation–based data visualization developed within the scope of the TÜBİTAK 2209-A Undergraduate Research Project, aiming to explain the neurological, psychological, and behavioral dimensions of addiction through visual storytelling techniques. The effects of addiction on the brain are modeled particularly through the frontal lobe mechanisms of “inhibition, reward, and decision-making,” and this process is reconstructed in animation form using scientific data obtained from Üsküdar University NP AMATEM. A multidisciplinary approach was adopted by employing both 2D and 3D animation techniques to create character, environment, and object designs through a multi-layered production workflow utilizing software such as ZBrush, Blender, Maya, Substance Painter, Procreate, and After Effects. By leveraging the educational and communicative power of medical animation, the addiction cycle is conveyed through a surreal and symbolic visualization style that enhances viewer comprehension, while the neurobiological foundations of addiction are presented with pedagogical clarity. Design principles -including form, color, silhouette, and exaggerated motion- were applied to strengthen narrative impact. As multidisciplinary studies of this nature remain limited in literature, this work contributes to the understanding of addiction mechanisms and demonstrates the innovative potential of animation as an effective tool in health communication.
