SANATTA KÜLTÜRLERARASI ETKİLEŞİM VE KÜRESELLEŞME BAĞLAMINDA “DESEN VE DEKORASYON HAREKETİ” GRUBUNUN ÖNEMİ

“Pattern and Decoration Movement” is a short-lived but effective art movement established in the United States on 1970. The principle of the group is based on the glorified art of traditional decoration and decoration based on craftsmanship. It has emerged as a response to the limited esthetic of modern art and the discriminatory view of Western art toward Eastern cultures. The group, which is intended specifically to combine the adornment and decoration traditions of Oriental cultures with contemporary plastic arts is the first example of intercultural fusion. Using decorative motifs in more Asian and Islamic traditions as a source of their art, group members have provided a different esthetic identity to all these elements and have them recognized internationally. The group members, who say adornment and decoration are as important as other esthetic positions, have used the stylistic motifs of Islamic and Asian decoration in their work, and interpret these motifs as a Western artist. The article, which is handled within the framework of this subject, aims to examine the importance of the Pattern and Decoration Movement in the history of art, its founding purposes, world views and artistic tendencies, and to discuss and analyze the works of art they made in the light of the data obtained from it.

“Desen ve Dekorasyon Hareketi” (Pattern and Decoration Movement) 1970 tarihinde Amerika’da kurulan kısa ömürlü fakat etkili bir sanat hareketidir. Grubun ilkesi el işçiliğine dayanan geleneksel süsleme ve dekorasyon sanatının yüceltilmesine dayanır. Dönemin modern sanatının kısıtlı estetiğine ve Batılı sanatın Doğulu kültürlere yönelik ayrımcı bakış açısına bir tepki olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Özellikle Doğulu kültürlerin dekorasyon ve süsleme geleneklerini çağdaş plastik sanatlarla kaynaştırma amacı taşıyan grup, bu yönüyle kültürlerarası kaynaşmanın ilk örneğini oluşturur. Daha çok Asya ve İslam geleneğinde yer alan dekoratif motifleri sanatlarının bir kaynağı olarak kullanan grup üyeleri, tüm bu unsurlara farklı bir estetik kimlik kazandırmış ve uluslararası alanda tanınmalarını sağlamıştır. Süsleme ve dekorasyonun diğer estetik konumlar kadar önemli olduğunu ileri süren grup üyeleri, çalışmalarında ağırlıklı olarak İslam ve Asya süsleme sanatının biçimsel motiflerini kullanmış, bu motifleri Batılı bir sanatçı gözüyle yorumlamışlardır. Bu konu çerçevesinde ele alınan makale Desen ve Dekorasyon Hareketi’nin sanat tarihindeki önemini, kuruluş amaçlarını, dünya görüşlerini ve sanatsal eğilimlerini incelemek, buradan elde edilen veriler ışığında yaptıkları sanat eserlerini tartışma ve analiz etme amacı taşır.
