Analysis of Afyon Gedik Ahmet Pasha Mosque Pediment Letters in Terms of Design Principles

Abstract

Gedik Ahmet Pasha Complex, one of the important buildings of Afyon, was built by Gedik Ahmet Pasha, the grand vizier of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan. İsmail Hakkı Altunbezer, one of the important representatives of calligraphy in the 20th century, composed the window mosque, which is a part of the complex. These compositions, created during the peak of Altunbezer's artistic career, were executed using the hand-drawn technique. This article examines the fourteen pediments of the Gedik Ahmet Pasha Mosque in terms of design principles. The scope of the research encompasses design elements such as point, shape, space, measure, and direction, as well as design principles such as repetition, rhythm, balance, harmony, conformity, and sovereignty. The primary objective of the study is to examine Altunbezer's compositions within the context of design principles and to conceptually evaluate the relationship between the texts and design principles. As part of the study, the mosque's pediment inscriptions were documented through photographs. After the photographs were transferred to the computer, notable sections of the inscriptions related to their design principles were analyzed using Photoshop and AutoCAD software. According to the results obtained from these inscriptions, which were analyzed in terms of design and whose current situation was evaluated, it was determined that in some pediment inscriptions, repetition and rhythm were applied, in some, letters were dominant and written in different sizes depending on the composition form, and in some, the principle of balance was applied with letters written on the right and left, and almost each of the pediment inscriptions stood out with different design elements and principles. The pediment inscriptions of the Afyon Gedik Ahmet Pasha Mosque, which were analyzed in terms of design and evaluated in terms of their current condition, are also important in terms of revealing the artistic taste of İsmail Hakkı Altunbezer, an important calligrapher of her time. At this point, it is thought that the inscriptions that were aesthetically damaged by the interventions should be corrected by qualified artists in accordance with Altunbezer's approach.
