The Cypress Motif in Shadirvans: Examples From Istanbul
Öz
Throughout history, different civilizations have attributed various symbolic meanings to animals, plants, and trees found in nature, transforming them into significant elements of artistic expression. Among these, the cypress tree has held a prominent position due to its longevity, evergreen nature, and upright form extending toward the sky. Consequently, it has been associated with concepts such as death, immortality, patience, eternity, and the afterlife. Possessing a rich symbolic significance in Turkish-Islamic art, the cypress motif was extensively employed during the Ottoman period in a wide range of artistic media, particularly in architectural ornamentation, tombstones, tile decoration, and stone carving. This study examines the cypress tree motifs found on the shadirvans (ablution fountains) of Istanbul from an art historical perspective. It investigates the motif's modes of application within the decorative programs of these structures, focusing on its compositional characteristics, execution techniques, and its relationship with other ornamental elements. Furthermore, the symbolic meanings attributed to the cypress motif are analyzed within the framework of Ottoman artistic tradition and Islamic aesthetics, thereby revealing its function and significance in the context of water architecture. The findings demonstrate that the cypress motif in Istanbul shadirvans functioned not merely as a decorative element but also as a powerful symbol embodying religious and cultural concepts such as immortality, paradise, tawḥīd (the oneness of God), patience, and abundance. In this respect, the study aims to contribute to the literature on Ottoman decorative arts and Turkish-Islamic art by highlighting the iconographic and aesthetic characteristics of cypress tree motifs in Istanbul shadirvans and by emphasizing their significance within the tradition of Ottoman water architecture.
