Investigation of Some Hematologic Changes in University Students After 14 Weeks of Swimming Training

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of 14-week swimming training on some hematologic values (WBC, RBC, HGB, PLT, HCT) of female university students. Our study included 28 female students, 14 experimental group and 14 control group, aged 18-24 years, who were studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences. In 14-week training sessions, female students were given a program that included anaerobic and aerobic exercises as well as swimming technical exercises. Blood samples were taken before and after the training program in the study. In the blood samples taken, WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, and PLT values of female students were taken and their changes were observed with the training. The data obtained were analyzed using an Independent T-Test and Paired-Samples T-Test. The data obtained were analyzed at p<0.05 significance level. In the blood samples taken before and after the study, there was a significant difference in the WBC value in the experimental group intra-group and inter-group comparison, while no significant change was detected in the pre-test and post-test measurements of RBC, HGB, HCT, PLT values. It was determined that the swimming exercise program did not significantly affect the values except the WBC value of the experimental group. This situation is thought to depend on the content of the training and the loading parameters.
