Reading A City Through The Eyes of Tanzimat: Carriages, Reconstruction and Infrastructure of Sivas (1860-1910)

Öz

Sivas, which is one of the most important cities in Anatolia with its universities and other historical aspects, owes the core of today’s city plan and development to the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Of course, this city was not built from scratch at that time, as every government advocates. However, in addition, the last century of the Ottoman Empire experienced important architectural developments, especially in the Tanzimat period, which was experienced as a result of the European-centered mentality. In short, it can be stated that architectural styles have become more modern and examples have become different. Of course, since this was the same with the regulations seen in many Anatolian cities, Sivas was actually a part of the whole. In this respect, the urbanization of Sivas in the 19th century and the developments in the city plan as well as how the regulations were implemented will be introduced and the contribution it made to the whole and its compatibility will be among those taken into account. Within the scope of this article, especially the architectural developments in the late Ottoman Sivas and accordingly the cars in the city, their interaction with the architecture and economic issues are discussed.
